Navigon have announced that they are creating a cradle for the iPhone just like TomTom. However, Navigon have made a very depressing comment that “the car kit to be released first will not have its own GPS chip, though subsequent models released may have one.”

This is a massive blow and would have had Navigon stealing the cradle market away from TomTom to better improve the poor iPhone GPS quality…

The lack of a GPS chip is not a deal breaker for me as my experience has been that the GPS apps work fine with the iPhone’s built-in chip. It would be a deal breaker for iPod Touch owners as the Touch does not have internal GPS hardware.
The biggest problem that I have encountered is that the iPhone speakers are not loud enough to be heard when the radio is playing or the windows are even partially open. A speaker that amplifies the voice direction would be a great improvement.
Without the built in speaker, the Navigon car mount is just one of many available on the market. Most of the others are less expensive.
