What I miss from Windows Mobile

I’ve been a Windows Mobile advocate for as long as I can remember….let’s see, I think the first Windows Mobile (Windows CE to be exact) was the Casio E-105 I had, so that means I’ve been with Windows Mobile now for about 7 or 8 years.

I really liked Windows Mobile, but as time moves on and devices/OS’s change, you have to change with them. Now I’ve moved across to the iPhone, but there’s a number of things I’m really truly missing on the iPhone.

The first is the lack of a home/today screen. You do get the wallpaper screen which you see when you power/resume your device or receive an inbound call, but what I’m really lacking is a true HOME screen. This is something that Windows Mobile has provided in the past (not very well) but with the advent of HTC’s Manilla interface and also other interfaces like SPB Mobile Shell, this is something I really long for on the iPhone with lots of widget control.

The second I guess is the lack of a weather app. You can get lots of great weather apps on the iPhone, but what I’d like to do is to have access to it at a quick swipe from the HOME screen. I guess on the iPhone you swipe to the screen you have the icon on (or move it to the front program screen) and access it from there, but for some reason it doesn’t quite feel the same, it feels like a third party app).

HTC hit a home run when it came to their Manilla app, and having the lovely rolodex style flip clock on the home screen, with built-in weather app.

The third thing that I also miss is the customisation. I know the iPhone is heavily customisable but if you take a look at SPB Mobile Shell (right), everything on-screen is a widget, and can be moved, removed, added and controlled. This was a great feature I loved when I switched to SPB’s Mobile Shell and something I really miss on the iPhone.

I also miss other items like

  • Removable Battery
  • Longer battery life
  • Mini USB standard chargers can be used
  • The option of a stylus (if you want to use one)
  • Ability to run multiple programs in memory at anyone time (unlike Apple where you’re only permitted to run one third party app at a time)
