NetNewsWire new version!

NetNewsWire have updated their app to remove the sync from Newsgator and to point to Google. A few weeks ago when I logged onto NewsGator they asked me what my Google Reader account was to prepare for this, I provided this and it then said it synchronised my feeds with Google. Great! But I didn’t look at it any further. Today I downloaded the NetNewsWire update for iPhone and it’s forcing me to log into my Google Reader account, I enter my details and low and behold I only have a few feeds that I had previously manually setup. :-(

So I log back into NewsGator and manually copy each of my RSS feeds out (and I have a lot) to Google Reader. Now it’s working okay, but caused me a good 30 mins of grief today! If you experience the same problem then you might need to log in to NewsGator and manually re-populate your RSS feeds (copy the RSS feed URL under Manage Feeds) and paste it into the ADD SUBSCRIPTION box in Google Reader in the browser.

The updates to NetNewsWire on the iPhone include:-

  • New version syncs with Google Reader
  • Performance enhancements since 1.0
  • It’s entirely a new application
  • Save to Instapaper
  • New view for starred items
  • New view for Latest news (last 24 hours)
  • New up and down arrows for navigating through your news list
  • Richer display: title and date of most recent item on Feeds screen. Excerpts and dates on news item lists.
  •
They’re right, it is an entirely new application, if you take a look at the screenshots above. At first I’m not sure I liked the look, but using it for 30 mins it’s looking better. The bad thing is they’ve implemented ads at the top of each screen which take up valuable real estate :-(
