iPhone mouse?

iphonemouseI had one of those Eureka moments the other day when suddenly an idea popped into my head with “what about an iPhone mouse?” No not Mickey mouse (pictured right) but actually why not turn the iPhone into a mouse? Think Nintendo Wii (controllers) but use an iPhone as a mouse with it’s accelerometer?

In theory it should be a plausible and wireless nice piece of hardware. I’m not sure if you would need to keep it powered on (not going into sleep) or whether there would potentially be other kinds of limitations, but wouldn’t it be a cool idea? That way you don’t need to use a mouse on a desk (or even a track ball) and you can float your hand up in the air and navigate the mouse pointer across the desktop by tilting the mouse. Perhaps a couple of buttons on the screen to indicate left and right click mouse buttons and everything would be covered.

Low and behold, I searched the App Store, and yes someone’s already designed an app for that! Here it is, the Mobile Air Mouse!

“Instantly transform your iPhone or iPod touch into an air mouse, trackpad, and wireless remote for your computer! Sit back and surf the web, browse your photo library or control your music player from the comfort of your couch. Our air mouse uses the built in accelerometer to translate your hand motions into mouse movements on your screen. It can also operate as a trackpad, allowing you to control your computer with a single finger.”

Although it could be a good idea, I can see the RSI complaints pouring in with tennis elbow and Carpel Tunnel Syndrome reports :-(

More information on the Mobile Air Mouse can be found on their Website.
