2x Exchange Profiles on one device?

Now that Google (GMail) have now converted their mail system into Exchange / Exchange clone, you can now get push email on your device which is great news. It’s something that most people want and don’t want to pay for. You then get notified immediately when email comes in rather than having to manually send/receive or check your email.

What if you already have an Exchange profile set on your device, e.g. for Work? Unfortunately you can only put one Exchange profile on a device, whether it’s an iPhone or Windows Mobile. So this means you have to choose between your work email or your personal email.

Not now…! Setup your normal work email to be Exchange, and have it sync to your device so you get your proper push email setup. Then for your GMail, just connect under a normal GMail setup on your device, and then download/purchase one of the various Push Email notifiers for GMail.

This gives you the best of both worlds.

  1. You can have your work Exchange email setup and get notified when new email comes in and receive your calendar appointments
  2. You can then also receive push notification of your GMail direct on your device

This is the easiest way around the Exchange limitation of having one Exchange setup per device.

Why is there a limitation?

The reason behind it is Exchange isn’t just email, it also syncs your calendar and tasks to your device.  Seeing that you only have one calendar and task application on your device, this is why you can’t have two Exchange profiles configured.

What the above does is give you an Exchange setup for your primary chosen email source syncing Email, Calendar and Tasks, and then gives you Push email for GMail.

I suggest using GPush for the iPhone, this works really well for me!

  1. there are a few problems with this approach:
    1. you rely on 3rd party server
    2. you giving out crucial details to 3rd party server, how securily protected unaware.
    3. you also rely on Apple Servers for notification
