TomTom v1.1 released for iPhone, unfortunately not much improvement

TomTom have released v1.1 of their navigation application for the iPhone. It’s been about a month, but it appears these are just a few minor updates.

Enhanced GPS

  • Shows your location on the map with greater precision
  • Follows your car more accurately while you drive

Navigate to Contacts

  • Handles many more address formats including abbreviations

I tried the update out, I haven’t checked out the precision accuracy yet but in terms of GPS in general, I didn’t see much difference in terms of the GPS fix.  I launched CoPilot, received a GPS fix within 3 seconds, closed CoPilot, launched TomTom and received the Waiting for Satellites message then Poor GPS Reception message.  I closed TomTom then launched CoPilot where it again had a GPS fix within about 1 second.  Looks like there’s something not right here with TomTom.  It looks like the TTFF (Time To First Fix) is somewhat extended in the update.  I think TomTom still have a lot of work to do to get close to CoPilot in terms of GPS.  Maybe TomTom are relying more on their new iPhone GPS Cradle to improve the GPS fix time and accuracy and making minor app tweaks.

I tried navigating to contacts that had a Suite name in their address, and it still couldn’t recognise this and had me re-enter the town, address, house number manually again.  So I don’t think there has been much improvement here in the update vs what TomTom listed in the App Store update comments.
