We all know that the iPad and iPhone are currently severely locked down from a multitasking perspective, but there are Apple apps like the iPod player that can take full use of the multitasking ability so you can listen to music and run apps at the same time. This is a good feature but Apple neglected an important side of this and that is extending it to the Video player.
Currently what happens is if you play a video you see the video and hear the audio, if you press the home button the video effectively pauses. This means that you cannot still listen to the audio on the video whilst checking your email and then resume the video by reopening the video app. This is unfortunately an annoying feature of the 3.x operating system and one I really hope Apple will address in iOS4. It’s so annoying that it’s now putting me off watching video podcasts and forcing me to return to the audio versions of these podcasts which is a real shame, as it means you lose a lot from not seeing the video. I wish I could still continue to watch the videos but having to pause the video every time you want to quickly check your email or open another application or open safari is a very real limitation and one I just cant work with. When I’m sitting in my lounge watching a video podcast, I like to multitasking myself, I’m not a person who will just sit and watch a video, I will watch a video or the TV and do something on my iPad or iPhone, and to that end Apple are really limiting us to what we can do
