Getting a haircut with the #iPad

It’s that time of the month where I had to go for a hair cut and I wondered whether I should take the iPad with me. I go to a great unisex salon and have done so for years, but as they cut female hair as well as male hair, they tend to take time and natter a lot more with the woman clientele getting their hair cut which means sometimes you have a long wait, and its great to be able to listen to a podcast, do some tweeting or facebooking or surf the net whilst I wait. I was trying to decide should I take the iPad or shouldn’t I? It was raining and I really didn’t want to get the iPad wet although it’s encased in my folio leather flip case, and had a bit of a walk to the salon. I also thought I would probably have a long wait and the iPad would be really useful connected to my HSDPA router.

However, that coupled with probably having to do a demonstration of the iPad (which I wouldn’t usually mind) I decided to leave it at home and took my iPhone instead. The main problem was the bulk and size of the iPad and it’s the first time that it hit me that the iPad is a little on the large size. Whenever I take it out with me I have never thought twice about not taking it. Mostly I take it when I go to friends or family where I know it will probably be used.

I guess this was a big turning point for me as I had podcasts and music loaded to my iPhone and I had access to my email, Twitter, Facebook and other apps, so I pretty much had everything I needed in the palm of my and that was truly portable.

As luck turned out, I only had a 2 minute wait so even if I had taken my iPad I wouldn’t have used it anyway. That’s where it really brought it home to me how large and cumbersome the iPad can sometimes be. It hasn’t put me off the iPad, but it might now make me think twice whether I need to take it with me or not if I’m going out. I certainly wouldn’t take it shopping with me, so maybe the iPad almost is just a couch computer?
