Google Listen for Android Review

Since using Podcaster for the iPhone I’ve been looking for a good equivalent Podcast program where it will automatically download my podcasts automatically under a subscription model to the Android device.

I looked at a number of products that didn’t really fit the bill until I found Google Listen. Google Listen is a free product for the Android platform and works well under Android OS 2.1 and 2.2 but I believe it works on earlier versions of the OS.

With Google Listen you can subscribe to known podcasts on the internet and also add your own podcasts if you have an RSS feed to pick from.

Once you’ve chosen an existing podcast / subscription or entered your own RSS feed, it then appears with album cover art for the podcast. Once you have this, it will start downloading the latest versions of the podcast as soon as it’s ready.

You have features that allow you to continue on from a podcast that you stopped, even if the app was closed, or the device was power cycled which is a great feature. You also have the protection to only download new podcast episodes over WiFi if you want. Bearing in mind that most podcast episodes can be anything from 10mb up to 100mb depending on the length and audio quality and encoding.

I’m really liking Google Listen, the only thing I haven’t found yet a way to overcome is to only play one episode. Sometimes I like to start to listen to an episode and fall asleep and in this case it starts playing all other episodes until I stop it.
