You MUST use WiFi to get a GPS fix
“Use wireless networks” is now turned off by default, but even with it on, the phone may be slow or unable to determine even a rough location. Originally, we’d believed this was the only problem. Samsung tells us that it’s a new Google mandate that Android devices be shipped with the “use wireless networks” option disabled, which means you’re relying on traditional GPS alone to determine your location — a lost cause indoors, in urban canyons, or under dense tree cover. Indeed, we discovered it was turned off on our Captivate, Vibrant, and Epic 4G after fresh hard resets, and there’s no indication to the user that it’s probably in their best interest to enable it; we’re accustomed to being presented with the option during account setup on other Android devices, but it doesn’t happen here. After enabling it from settings, we found that both the Captivate and Epic 4G were able to get our location with 1,000 to 1,500-meter accuracy practically immediately in Google Maps, though the Vibrant still never came through; it had the weakest signal of the three, which may have accounted for that (though it never dropped the signal altogether).

GPS in the Samsung Galaxy S range just aren’t doing their job.
Cell tower triangulation and WiFi location database services like Skyhook only take you so far — at the end of the day, you still need to tune in to the birds a few thousand miles up to figure out precisely where you are. All Galaxy S models seem to be having trouble turning GPS reception into coordinates, even when the phone is able to see four or more satellites in view (four is the minimum you normally need for a precise, three-dimensional lock). In some cases, resetting the phone apparently helps, but it ceases to work again after a day or two of use. To our knowledge, none of the homebrew fixes out there have been able to solve this part of the problem perfectly and permanently. The Captivate and Vibrant are both affected by this one; we’re not sure on the Epic, but we’re working to nail it down.

Traffic is updated real-time (approx every 15 mins) so you always receive the latest traffic information for your journey with CoPilot Live 8. You can also search for Traffic around your currently GPS location or around a city you may be driving to of your choice and you can also view traffic incidents on the map. When viewing traffic incidents on map you see traffic between two points been coloured orange to signify a traffic incident/blockage.

The latest version of CoPilot Live v8 (8.0.0.469) which is available from the iTunes App Store now enables you to fully control your music from within CoPilot.

NOTE – This does not necessarily mean the third party apps work through the GPS port on the Cradle but means that the third party apps are not blocked from using the internal GPS Receiver.

Likewise something else that CoPilot customers have requested is the ability to mute CoPilot so CoPilot doesn’t provide any audible instructions whilst navigating. This can be good if you really want to listen to your MP3′s and don’t want to be disturbed by CoPilot telling you to turn left at the next road but still want CoPilot to still navigate you to your destination.

• Launch CoPilot
• Activate using the same CoPilot Live ID

• As per image (right), ask customers to
• Uninstall Copilot on the iPhone
• Sync iPhone to iTunes on PC/Mac
• Re-Transfer CoPilot downloaded on the PC to the iPhone
• Unplug USB cable from iPhone
• Launch CoPilot
• Activate using the same CoPilot Live ID

To enable Text-To-Speech you will need to follow these steps…

1. Go to the Settings on the iPhone (outside of CoPilot)
2. Select “CoPilot NA”
3. Change “License Reset” to “On”. (See image right)
4. Close the Settings
5. Start CoPilot NA
6. Enter your CoPilot ID and Password.
7. Activate your Product.

NOTE – If you previously upgraded to Traffic, Fuel Prices and Local Search, by performing the above will lose these settings. You will need to re-enter your upgrade PKC that you purchased in LICENSING | UPGRADE to re-enable the purchased premium features.

As often happens, the passion devolves to nasty comments going back and forth, but clearly, some people are having a GPS problem which Apple is not acknowledging as a bug. They are giving some people new phones, but others aren’t getting them because their iPhones are out of warranty.”

Here’s a typical comment from a customer in the iPhone Forums “”I could not get a satellite GPS (blinking blue dot) on my iPhone, while two other phones running 3.0 like me, got it within seconds. So I returned my unit, and got it replaced. The new phone got a correct GPS signal at once and according to MotionX GPS it was correct within 8 meters. “

This is something I see a lot, and people need to understand that sometimes the iPhone GPS gets somewhat confused. Here’s what I would recommend.

What a lot of iPhone customers fail to understand is that Google maps uses other technologies inside the 3GS, e.g the compass to track which direction you are moving in, and likewise it also uses AGPS more than other apps, which triangulates your position using cellphone towers. So when someone says “ah but Google maps works okay” it’s probably using AGPS or the iPhone 3GS compass to assist in navigation more.
