Android 2.0 (Eclair) is due to be released soon, amongst a number of new features Eclair will boost support for multiple email accounts running on the same device and offer full multiple Exchange account support. This comes after the Palm Pre added multiple exchange support on a single device. In the current connected world, most of the busy users of smartphones now have multiple email accounts and it’s becoming more popular to have multiple exchange email accounts, e.g. one for work and one for personal. The beauty of Exchange is the push email where emails get pushed to your device, so you don’t lose a single email or miss an email for 3 hours because it’s always there. No mindless send/receive button to press, the device pings back to the server regularly and email gets pushed out to the device when new mail arrives which creates almost a seamless connection.

A number of other enhancements for Android 2.0 are

Multiple email accounts running on one Android phone. You can now finally sync personal and business Gmail credentials in one program. Synergy FTW! Email, contacts, and Exchange can run smoothly on one phone.

Quick Contact widget adds a shortcut to getting to SMS, email, or phone directly from the contact list. Email, Messaging, and Calendar apps can also launch the Quick Contact widget

Microsoft Exchange support built into the OS so users no longer need third-party apps
Search SMS and MMS messages and auto-delete oldest message in conversation when a defined limit is reach

Camera tweaks Built-in flash support for capable phones, digital zoom, scene mode, white balance, color effect, and macro focus (up close photos)

Improved virtual keyboard designed for improved speed, more accuracy, multi-touch support for rapid typing, and smarter dictionary that includes contact names

New UI for Browser app with instant searches, bookmarks with web page thumbnails, double-tap zoom, and HTML5 support

Calendar changes that include more scrolling in Agenda view and invitee attendance status

Bluetooth 2.1 and new Object Push Profile and Phone book Access Profile. Bluetooth that allows people to send and receive data. Proximity-based interaction allows for your phone to communicate with another via Bluetooth.

Here’s a video with more information from Google on what Android 2.0 is capable of…

Now that Google (GMail) have now converted their mail system into Exchange / Exchange clone, you can now get push email on your device which is great news. It’s something that most people want and don’t want to pay for. You then get notified immediately when email comes in rather than having to manually send/receive or check your email.

What if you already have an Exchange profile set on your device, e.g. for Work? Unfortunately you can only put one Exchange profile on a device, whether it’s an iPhone or Windows Mobile. So this means you have to choose between your work email or your personal email.

Not now…! Setup your normal work email to be Exchange, and have it sync to your device so you get your proper push email setup. Then for your GMail, just connect under a normal GMail setup on your device, and then download/purchase one of the various Push Email notifiers for GMail.

This gives you the best of both worlds.

You can have your work Exchange email setup and get notified when new email comes in and receive your calendar appointments

You can then also receive push notification of your GMail direct on your device

This is the easiest way around the Exchange limitation of having one Exchange setup per device.

Why is there a limitation?

The reason behind it is Exchange isn’t just email, it also syncs your calendar and tasks to your device. Seeing that you only have one calendar and task application on your device, this is why you can’t have two Exchange profiles configured.

What the above does is give you an Exchange setup for your primary chosen email source syncing Email, Calendar and Tasks, and then gives you Push email for GMail.

I suggest using GPush for the iPhone, this works really well for me!

Some iPhone customers reported problems connecting to their Exchange servers after updating to iPhone 3.1 update last week.

However, iPhone 3.1 upgrade wasn’t to blame for these problems, and according to Apple all is working as it should be now, reports CNET.

Natalie Harrison of Apple explained that Apple added device encryption to the data that can be managed by IT admins using Exchange Server 2007, and the policy whether to support the iPhone 3G along with the iPhone 3GS is set by the administrator and can be changed at any time.

So what does this mean?

iPhone OS 3.0 did not identify itself properly to Exchange 2007 on any iPhone. This means that if you had a 3G and Exchange 2007 was configured to require hardware encryption, you could still login, even though the device does not have hardware encryption. This was a bug!

With iPhone OS 3.1, all iPhones identify themselves properly to the server, essentially fixing a glitch in the previous operating system. However, now iPhone and iPhone 3G users that upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1 cannot login to Exchange 2007 servers that require hardware encryption.

If you use the new iPhone 3GS, you won’t notice any change. Apple’s newest phone is equipped with hardware encryption, so it will meet the requirements of the Exchange server when identifying itself.

If you already upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1 on an iPhone or iPhone 3G and connect to an Exchange 2007 server, you can ask that the IT admin turn off the hardware encryption requirement for those devices.

If you don’t have an exchange account, but you do have a Google Mail account (GMail), then you can receive push notifications for a very small fee (<£1 for most apps) that enable push notification and constantly check for new inbound email. GPush is one of them that is fairly light weight, just provides you with an icon on your program screen and nothing more.

Once you see you have waiting messages signified by the number 1 showing against GPush, you jus topen up your regular MAIL icon (not the GPush one) and read your mail. It’s that simple! Once you’ve read your email the unread messages flag will be removed from the icon within 30 seconds.

While the iPhone 3GS supports Exchange encryption and is thus unaffected, the previous generation devices reportedly do not, leading to the error shown above.

Outside buying an iPhone 3GS or getting your Exchange Admin to turn off the encryption requirement (good luck with that!) we’ll have to wait for another update from Apple to fix this.
